Savina has opened its first international franchise in Eschborn, a town outside the European financial services hub in Frankfurt.
The town has a population of 23,000 and also hosts major companies with a workforce of an additional 28,000.
Savina is an upmarket brand created by Magro Bros of Xewkija as a celebration of traditional Gozitan skills and traditions. It encompasses something for all the senses, from food and drinks to crafts, hand-made scented candles and a music CD. The emphasis is on quality, from the choice of ingredients to the packaging design and presentation.
Magro Bros. managing director John Magro always intended Savina to be an international brand and when he was approached by Maria Galea, a Maltese woman living in Eschborn, it was immediately clear that he had found the right person.
“Maria has a sound business acumen and is very determined to make a success out of this new venture,” Mr Magro said at the official opening.
“We promise to give her all the support she will require in the years to come.”
The shop has been redecorated in Savina colours, with the eye-catching photography and banners that are already synonymous with the select group of Savina outlets in Malta and Gozo.
Ms Galea has already taken part in a few local fairs and has organised tasting sessions in the shop to familiarise her clientele with the Mediterranean delicacies. She described the response as being “really encouraging”.

“I believe that there is a real demand for good products that remind Germans of their holidays in the sun – and this is exactly what Savina provides. My clients often purchase items as gifts to present to friends when they go to dinner but end up coming back to buy things for themselves.
“And I have already received a number of enquiries for big orders for corporate gifts. I am very enthusiastic about the potential. I will soon have to speak to Mr Magro about the possibility of other franchises in Germany.”
The opening, at the end of May, was attended by Mr Magro as well as by the mayor of Eschborn Wilhelm Speckhart, as well as the town’s museum curator Gerhard Raiss, who is responsible for twinning Eschborn with Zabbar. The opening got considerable coverage in the local newspaper, which has a circulation of around 80,000.
